Ask the Abbey....
Sleeping in Makeup

There is a mineral makeup that advertises being healthy enough to sleep in. You told me once that I should never go to bed without cleaning off makeup and applying treatments. Do you think it is okay to sleep in mineral makeup?

| NATURAL BEAUTY: Titanium Dioxide Controversy |
|
I would like to respond to recent concerns that have arisen over the use of titanium dioxide in personal products. Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring mineral that is white, opaque, odorless, absorbent and found in a range of products, including cosmetics. It is a base ingredient in mineral foundations and is one of the ingredients (along with zinc oxide) consistently recommended as a safe and effective sunscreen. The recent controversy has arisen over a report that titanium dioxide is carcinogenic. Is this report true? The answer lies in the size of the particles.

| FOUNTAIN of YOUTH QUICK TIP: Sleep your way to weight loss and beauty |
|
| Go to bed already!
Some things are worth repeating and we have mentioned the link between getting sufficient rest and weight loss in the past (June Newsletter 2005). (Not to mention that lack of sleep has been also linked to heart disease, a weakened immune system, facial wrinkles, diminished brain function, and grouchiness.) A new sixteen-year study at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland involving 70,000 women has validated the link between inadequate sleep and weight gain. The findings show that women who received less than five hours of sleep per night were 32% more likely to experience a major weight gain of 33 pounds or more over the course of the study. This is about two pounds a year, which doesn't seem like much but it adds up quickly.
This is important for women of a certain age because weight gain, not to mention a rearranging of weight, is often experienced by menopausal and post-menopausal women. Facial fullness can accentuate sagging features and neckline wrinkles and contributes to the appearance of aging as skin loses firmness and elasticity. Somebody once said, "Tomorrow is another day." She was right. So put down the book, turn off the television and go to bed!

| SKIN CARE COSMETICS: Eye Opener |
|
|
Less is Younger ~~ Keep it Natural
Skin that is losing firmness needs less makeup, not more. Makeup tends to slide into and accentuate even tiny facial furrows. Mineral powders applied with a light hand reflect light and minimize wrinkles and sagging.
Open up tired eyes with an application of a light colored powder applied with a camouflage brush, or Eye Primer applied with a brush or your small finger, from the outer corner of your eyebrow down towards the outer corner of your eye. Add a line of this lightener under the brows towards the fold of your eye lid as well. Blend into the skin for an instant eye opening lift.

| WELLNESS: Catching a Cold from Your Swimming Pool |
|
As you know I eschew the fear mongering that accompanies many scientific studies, but I recently read one that possesses a logic so hard to ignore that I am compelled to bring it to your attention. The April 2007 European Respiratory Journal (Vol 29, No. 4, pp.690-698) found that people who spend a great deal of time near chlorinated pools face an increased risk of breathing problems. As a teacher for twenty years I have noticed a steady increase in the number of children prone to allergies, asthma and respiratory irritations. The Journal article gives us some things to think about we prepare swimming pools for summer activities.
