"Should I match eye shadow with my eye color?"

Choose contrasting colors to highlight your eyes. Matching shadow to eye color cancels out your eyes. If tired eyes are red or have dark circles, avoid blue and grey shades. A professional eye shadow application uses three shades of increasing intensity:

  • Choose a lighter shade to highlight brow bone, lightly sweeping from top of brow bone to brow.
  • Use medium shade for middle of eye to enhance the color of your iris. Cover entire eyelid, to just above the crease.
  • Use a deeper tone to add depth.  Apply at outer corner of eye, just above the lashes. Continue along the eyelid where the brow bone hits the crease (not IN the crease) moving in an arch inward. Do not darken the innermost part of eyelid. Blend gently, adding additional color if desired.

Always tap off excess powder before applying to eye area.  Layer color rather than apply an excess all at once.

Additional Quick Color Tips for Beautiful Eyes.

    1. Perfectly applied color is blended, blended, blended. You should never see where one color ends and another begins.
    2. Light colors or shimmers make eyes look bigger, more open, and brighter. Light pinks or vanilla colors camouflage tired, deep set eyes.                 Pearly shades under brows open up the whole eye area.
    3. Soft, neutral shades are more anti-aging than bright or overly sparkly colors.
    4. Soft, matte shades minimize puffy eyelids.
    5. Medium shades of powder on the middle of the lid makes eyes more noticeable.
    6. A dot of light or medium color on the inside corner of the eyes makes close set eyes look further apart.
    7. Dark shadows make eyes recede. Use deep colored shadow on prominent eyes, above the crease, or areas that you want to minimize. Deep color at the inner corners of the eyes makes wide set eyes appear closer.
    8. Blue liner placed along the lower lid of the eyes will make red eyes look brighter. Be subtle. Not everyone can carry this off.
    9. Matte eye shadow tends to emphasize oily lids. A slight shimmer or sparkle will reflect light to minimize any creasing that appears.
    10. Minimize creasing with a primer or dusting of mineral foundation or finishing powder before applying shadow color.
    11. Choose shades to compliment your eyes as well as your clothing.
    12. Don't let your eyes and lips fight each other. Strong eye makeup requires subtle lip color. Dramatic ruby lips are best highlighted with less passionate eyes.
    13. Transparent loose powder (Kashmir Pearls) applied with a soft, loose brush helps set eye color. A slight spritz of Pomegranate Hydrating Mist, or Endless Day Setting Mist also helps.
