Stay Fresh In The Summer With These 15 Hot-Weather Makeup Tips

Tired of feeling gloopy and sticky when you wear makeup during the summer months? It’s time to switch up your makeup routine and leave the smudgy raccoon eyes and oily T-zone in the distant past. These summer makeup tips from Abbey St. Clare will have you feeling fresh-faced and beautiful even on the hottest days of the season.

1. Summer is all about oil control.

High heat and even higher humidity are a perfect recipe for increased oil production. If your skin is extra oily, you’ll need a cleanser, toner, or skin treatment that cuts through the shine and tones down your skin’s oil production.

Choose a product with salicylic acid if acne seems to pop up when your skin produces more oil.

2. Give your products time to absorb.

Giving each product you apply time to fully absorb into your skin before reaching for the next product will help prevent that overly gloopy, sticky feeling.

Thoroughly massage each product into your skin, making sure there is no residue left behind before you apply the next product.

3. Choose mineral-based products.

Mineral makeup settles into moist skin and gives it a natural evenness and coloration. It’s also wonderfully resistant to humidity.

Try this: Sprinkle a bit of mineral powder foundation in your hand and then drip a tiny bit of water onto it. The water will bead up and roll off!

As an added bonus, minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide offer broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. They also adhere to your skin much more effectively when the weather is hot than other sunscreen additives typically do.

4. Steer clear of liquid, cream, and pressed foundations.

Cream and pressed foundations always migrate to the cracks in your skin, highlighting your wrinkles and fine lines rather than concealing them. That’s why we recommend avoiding these products during the summer.

Whenever possible, choose powders over creams and liquids!

5. Go heavy at night and light in the morning.

In the winter you need to add more moisturizing to your skincare routine. But in the summer you actually need less supplemental moisturizing.

Apply your heavy creams at night before you go to bed, and you’ll wake up feeling smooth and hydrated. After a quick wash, you’ll be ready to apply your makeup and head out the door.

6. Opt for a mattifying powder.

You’ve opted for our oil-controlling suggestions and skipped the heavy moisturizers. So what do you do when these measures still don’t prevent your skin from getting oily as the day wears on?

Use this matte powder primer with or without makeup whenever you need to tone down a reflective shine! It’s translucent, so it works with most skin colors and won’t make you look ashy or pale. It’s also super easy to brush on for a light touch-up throughout the day.

7. When in doubt, keep it simple.

Summer is the best season to let your natural beauty shine through. Skip the makeup products you don’t absolutely need and let your sun-kissed glow do the work for you.

After all, the makeup that isn’t there can’t go awry.

On especially hot days, try skipping foundation altogether and simply dusting a light layer of finishing powder on your face to even out your tone and provide a little bit of sun protection.

8. Tone down the blush.

Who needs blush when you’re tanned and rosy-cheeked from the heat and sun?

Either go light on your cheek color or skip it altogether during the summer. Eliminating just a layer or two of makeup will help your skin breathe when the weather is hot.

If you must add color, opt for a healthy bronze glow rather than a warm pink, as the latter may make you look flushed and sunburned.

9. Lock your makeup in place with a refreshing facial mist.

After applying your makeup, a setting mist or hydrosol can help lock your look in place without making it run.

For best results, hold the sprayer at arm’s length and let a light mist gently settle over your face. You can pat gently to dry, but don’t rub!

10. Don’t touch your face!

The less you touch your face during the day, the less oil and dirt you’ll transfer from your hands. Additionally, if your skin is a little damp and sweaty, touching it only makes it more likely to smear.

11. Refresh your makeup. Don’t add more.

If your makeup looks a little lackluster by midday, give your face a quick refresh by patting it with cool water on a sponge or a clean towel. Again—don’t rub!

You can also use a hydrosol spray to mist your face if you don’t want to carry around a sponge and look for a sink when you need a boost.

You can touch up your makeup if you really need to. But do your best to remove any caked-on areas—and pay special attention to the creases—before applying a fresh coat of powder.

12. Opt for softer colors.

Lighter colors are more forgiving during the summer. If those colors could get smudged later on, you’ll want to make sure you don’t have a hot pink smear on your cheek or an electric blue drip traveling down your face.

And you don’t have to stick with only neutral tones. You can still have fun with bright, jewel-toned colors; simply apply them with a lighter hand for a pastel pop.

13. Trust the process.

If you follow this process, your eyeliner and shadow will look nice all day long:

  • Use eye primer on your lids before applying anything else
  • Dust a bit of powder foundation or finishing powder on your lids using a camouflage brush
  • Apply your eye makeup
  • Use one more layer of powder to set your look in place

14. Use waterproof mascara when possible.

Waterproof mascara tends to accelerate lash loss and breakage, so you don’t want to use it all the time.

However, using waterproof mascara during the humid, hot months can be a lifesaver when it comes to avoiding the sweaty raccoon look.

Remove mascara nightly to protect your lashes from damage. Our Rice & Olives Cleanser gently melts off even waterproof mascara, while it nourishes your lashes. Apply with a wet washcloth.

15. Get glossy.

While the rest of your face might be suffering from excess moisture, your lips may be dehydrated and cracked from all the UV exposure.

Long-lasting matte lip colors typically worsen dry, cracked lips, so you’ll want to avoid them when your lips aren’t feeling their best. Instead, choose a glossy color that actually adds moisture instead of depleting it.

To prevent color migration and smudging, try applying your gloss over a layer of mineral foundation or finishing powder. Then lock it all in with an additional layer of translucent powder over top of your gloss. This should extend the life of your lip color.
