The Four Thieves Story
The story of a Four Thieves dates back to the early fifteenth century, the time of the Black Death (Bubonic Plague) that decimated the population of Europe. During the outbreak, four marauders were captured stealing from the sick and dying and were sentenced to burn at the stake.
Now, at that time, contracting the disease meant almost certain death, but despite the close contact of the thieves with victims, they never were sick. Although the crime was punishable by being burned alive, the judge was so intrigued by their apparent immunity from the plague that he offered to spare them this form of punishment if they would share the secret of their protection from plague.
The thieves relayed that they were once spice merchants and prepared a potion of herbs and oils that when applied to their extremities and within a mask held over their mouths, protected them from infection. The judge saved them from the fire and allowed them to be hanged for their crimes.
Healers who treated Black Death victims used the secret herbal formula on their skin and later stuffed into beak-like masks covering their mouths. (The origin of the term “quack” for healers is often attributed to these masks, but the term didn't come into common usage until 1800's.) They were perhaps the first to exercise social distancing by carrying long sticks with which to examine patients without getting too close.
