7 Ways to Prep Your Skin for Spring and Summer

Spring is a great time to invest in cleaning up the house, but it's also a good reminder to take the necessary steps to prep your skin for the upcoming spring and summer months. Here are our top tips to get your skin glowing for spring.

1. Switch to Lighter Mineral Makeup

As temperatures soar, the primers and foundations you used in the winter may become too heavy for your skin. Along with the dense ingredients that are used in these products, increased sweat on your face can clog pores, increase shine, and cause breakouts or inflammation.

Spring is the ideal time to make the switch to mineral makeup. These natural skin care products have a minimal list of ingredients, and they aren’t loaded with chemical and synthetic components like many of the big-brand commercial cosmetics.

Mineral makeup products are gentle on skin because they contain no irritating ingredients and can help to correct redness and uneven skin tones. Whether you are looking for eyeshadow, foundation, or concealer, mineral products offer lightweight coverage that is perfect for your spring and summer skin care.

2. Incorporate SPF Into Your Routine

Longer days translate into more time spent in the sun, so it’s important to add SPF into your skincare routines. UV rays are known to speed aging and increase your risk of skin cancer, and unprotected skin is extremely vulnerable. Damage from sun exposure accumulates over time, but products with SPF will shield your skin from these damaging rays.

All-natural mineral makeup with SPF offers numerous benefits, from protecting skin to repairing it. For example, this BB Cream Foundation/Primer contains SPF 30 sun protection along with organic ingredients that hydrate skin and increase luminosity. It balances skin tone, camouflages blemishes, and works smoothly as a primer beneath your foundation.

For a fresh look, avoid heavy foundations that will congeal with oil and sweat in the warm summer sun. Look for products such as our Mineral Sheer Tint Foundation, which provides SPF 20 sun protection with a natural, oil-free finish. It minimizes the appearance of lines and wrinkles, won’t crease, and glides onto your skin like cool velvet.

3. Hydrate with Lightweight Facial Oils

Skin may be more prone to oiliness when temperatures rise, but it’s still important to maintain proper hydration. Put away the heavy lotions that you used during the winter, and stay moisturized with lightweight products such as facial oils.

Contrary to what you might expect, facial oils feel light and silky when applied. They glide onto skin and absorb quickly, leaving it smooth and hydrated. Natural botanical oils are packed with nutrients that soak deeply into skin. Essential oils hydrate from within, and target fine lines and wrinkles without clogging pores.

Facial oils can be added to sunscreen to provide extra protection against the drying effects of direct sunlight. Facial oils also gently and naturally boost anti-aging effects when applied in preparation for other anti-aging products. These versatile oils are an often-overlooked but highly beneficial part of a spring and summer skincare routine.

4. Add in Antioxidants

Along with the risk of sunburns, increased time spent in the sunlight exposes you to UV-induced free radicals. These are highly destructive molecules that cause cumulative damage to your skin. The free radicals in the environment can break down collagen and elastin in your skin, worsening wrinkles, sun spots, and uneven skin tones.

You can combat these harmful effects by adding antioxidants to your spring and summer skincare regimen. Antioxidants occur naturally in many plants and foods. These organic ingredients can be incorporated into a natural skin care routine in a wide variety of formats and product types.

An astringent antioxidant such as Witch Hazel Hydrosol is excellent for cleansing, controlling oil and shine, and providing anti-aging benefits. Antioxidant Lip Gloss is infused with ingredients such as green tea extract and Vitamin E, so it protects your lips from free radicals while moisturizing naturally with a smooth, balm-like texture. Radical Creme contains a synergy of antioxidants, along with other nurturing ingredients, that tone and soften skin and increase radiance for a more youthful appearance. And when sun spot damage has occurred, FADE contains ten of the most effective skin tone-balancing and lightening plant extracts in an anti-aging antioxidant formula. Use it on your hands, as well as the face and neck.

5. Use Natural Anti-Aging Skin Care Alternatives

Retinol is still considered the most effective ingredient for anti-aging benefits. Although it is safe to use year-round, it makes skin more sensitive to sunlight for many. Skin that has been rejuvenated with retinol can be more prone to burning and sun sensitivity, making its usage problematic during the sunny spring and summer months.

To avoid irritation, only apply retinol before you go to bed. If you find that your skin becomes more sensitive by retinol use, cut back to applying it only two to three times a week. During the daytime, switch to natural anti-aging skin care alternatives such as Vitamin C.

Vitamin C skin care is perfect for spring and summer, as regular use can help gently distressed skin that has been harmed by too much exposure to UV rays and free radicals. Vitamin C Complex Serum lightens, brightens, and tones, while diminishing wrinkles and promoting the appearance of firm and youthful skin. It is natural, gentle, and effective against sun damage. Obtain a synergistic effect with the use of Vitamin C Tonic both morning and night. Also, receive relief from sunburn by applying this soothing tonic anywhere on the body.

6. Exfoliate for Radiance

An essential part of any spring and summer skin care routine is regular exfoliation. Just as you scrub the floors during spring cleaning, now is the time to buff away dead and dull skin cells!

Although too-frequent exfoliation can leave your skin temporarily thinner and more sensitive, periodic gentle exfoliation is crucial to keeping your pores free of the sweat and grime that accumulate during hotter weather. When these combine with heavy makeup and products, they clog pores and lead to redness, irritation, blackheads, and acne. Once or twice a week, it’s beneficial to use a mild exfoliant for healthy and radiant skin.

Look for exfoliants with salts and sugars, enzymatic scrubs with fruit acids, or professional micro-crystalline beads that gently polish the skin’s surface. Green Tea Scruffing Milk Cleanser contains micro-dermabrasion crystals to produce smooth and clear skin. Its formula is 90% organic and packed with AHAs, Salicylic Acid, Vitamin C, and green tea extracts that cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish your skin, leaving it silky smooth with a youthful glow.

7. Sun-Worship Safely

The reality is that you need a dose of sunshine every day for optimal production of Vitamin D in your skin. This permits calcium absorption in your body. Besides, spring and summer wouldn’t be any fun without sunshine, so don’t feel that you have to lock yourself inside to avoid dangerous UV rays and free radicals. Going outside is inevitable and advisable; just make sure to take the proper steps to protect your skin!

Avoid heavy products during the hotter months, and incorporate lightweight facial oils and sheer mineral makeup. Add SPF into your routine through products such as foundation and lip gloss. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen during the day! Exfoliate gently, and use antioxidants and natural anti-aging skin care alternatives like Vitamin C to counteract sun damage.

Last, but not least, don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat. A tightly-woven hat with at least a two-inch brim will provide the best protection for the vulnerable areas around your face, ears, throat, and shoulders. Look fabulous while you’re looking out for your skin!

By following these suggestions, you can easily and effectively prep your skin for the upcoming spring and summer months. Abbey St. Clare will help you find the best natural skin care products to achieve a healthy glow.
